risperdal consta, drug delivery systems

Posted by xbunny on July 10, 2005, at 8:34:01

I am just curious but I was wondering if anyone knew anything about the mechanism of using liposomes and other macro chemicals structures containing a payload to deliver drugs around the body and if this might have some relevance to psychiatric drugs. Some of the things that I was thinking of was; somehow using a special delivery system to delivery drugs to certain locations within the body (ie just some part of the brain) to minimize side effects, using special delivery structures to allow timed release or 'on demand' delivery of the drug. Im sure there are other ideas too. The only thing close I could find was risperdal consta, the references I could find say it uses micro plastic blobs to slowly dissolve and deliver the drug, how small are these? Also I wonder why risperdal consta is an injection and not a pill? could not a delivery system that would live in the guts exist? maybe attaching itself to the stomach wall? is there any research I could read that I might understand lol

Thanks for reading Buns

I got interested in this after watching the OU last night about liquid crystals and liposomes, fascinating stuff!
