The two drugs are approximately equipotent with respect to dosage.

Imipramine gets more people well than desipramine. It is probably logical to first find the dosage of imipramine that works before switching over to an equivilant dosage of desipramine. If you lose the antidepressant effect once you crossover to desipramine, you will know that the additional properties of imipramine were necessary for the therapeutic response.
