Many researchers propose that ADD is not caused by a lack of dopamine, but probably rather a functional deficiancy (ie. somehow the receptors are not working optimally and/or underdevelopment of certain brain regions)
If this was the case than the last thing you want to do is to induce dammage to the few functional receptors that one has remaining.Let me give another example. Parkinsons is not caused by a lack of dopamine, but rather problems in dopamine reception due to neuronal loss. While amphetamines have been found to provide symptomatic improvement to the condition, they may infact worsen the course of the illness, due to their neurotoxic potential.
