In the 70s lots of people who would now be diagnosed as bipolar were dxd as schizophrenic. I knew two who died. They probably had suboptimal treatment, although the proper treatment didn't seem crash hot either. I wouldn't worry about diagnosis as much as symptom relief. Diagnoses come and go.
