It's a great combo - particularly if it works.I think you know what needs to be done.
You are against Effexor for reasons that seem to have less to do with the effectiveness of the drug and more to do with the potential withdrawal syndrome.
You also know that 25-50mg of Zoloft is usually inadequate for depression. You might have to go higher.
You also know that to leave Effexor and come back to it later might leave you resistant to responding to it again.
There is a lot to consider. I have seen Zoloft 100-200mg + Wellbutrin 300mg work very well for some poeple. It is a reasonable combination that I myself would try if Wellbutrin hadn't treated me so badly. It made me particularly dysphoric and not at all energized.
If it were me, and there were things about the way Effexor treated me that I didn't like, I would certainly move on to another SRI. Everyone has their favorites based upon how they have responded to them. Zoloft might be no better than Lexapro, no better than Paxil, etc.
I liked Zoloft. It did seem like a smooth drug with few side effects. Most everyone gets headaches with it as a startup side effect, but they usuallly soon pass. I responded to it briefly.

I think you can cut through the confusion by asking yourself, "what did I not like about the Effexor?" If Effexor was therapeutically inadequate and carried with it side effects that you would like to try to avoid, then it makes sense to move on. Zoloft is as good a drug as any to choose as your SRI. Just remember that withdrawing from Zoloft is no picnic either.
