What other people have done when ambien poops out on them is to switch to lunesta. And then later on, you can alternate weekly between the two to prevent ambien tolerance. Lunesta generally does not poop out nearly as significantly as ambien does.
Another option might be to take very low dose of elavil or doxepin(5mg to 10mg). Very low dose seroquel (25mg) or zyprexa (1.25mg to 2.5mg) work good too. Seroquel has a short half life of about 6 hours.
In any case, if ambien is pooping out on you, I do not think that changing the type of ambien or increasing dose are good options.
