In reply to Can I take Elavil with Effexor and Klonopin?, posted by Colleen D. on November 16, 2005, at 19:01:41
hi! Does the Effexor help any? Cymbalta has been FDA approved for this purpose...perhaps you could try a switch? You certainly can take TCAs in combo with SSRIs, Effexor/Cymbalta, and sometimes MAOIs but..it does make things a bit trickier. When I took Cymbalta, adding Tofranil helped, but I got cardiovascular side effects. The problem was the dosing; apparently, when you add Tricyclics to newer antidepresants, the blood levels of both drugs sometimes go up considerably, so there's a higher likelihood of toxicity and side effects...this doesn't mean you *will* have a problem, it just means your doc needs to adjust your dosage more carefully than if you were just on Elavil or just on Effexor. The Klonopin mixes pretty well with most medications. Have you tried Neurontin or Lyrica? I think those are pretty popular options for neuropathic pain...maybe adding that to the mix could help a bit, too.
