Suppositories

Suppositories can be very useful for patients who are unable to swallow. Many terminally ill patients take SSRIs. Their SSRI may have to be discontinued abruptly if they loose the ability to swallow. Increased distress and unpleasant withdrawal symptoms may result.

IMO, it would be useful if fluoxetine was available as suppositories.

Why are people (particularly American and British men) so averse to the use of suppositories? Grow up guys! What is their problem? Do they not wash properly? ;-)

Suppositories can be useful in many circumstances.....

1. For people who can't swallow tablets

2. For people who are suffering from severe nausea and vomiting eg. due to migraine

3. For the terminally ill

4. When a local action on the rectum is required eg. Ulcerative Colitis, Crohn's disease, Haemorrhoids

5. For babies eg. acetaminophen for an acute infection

6. In the treatment of severe constipation

Suppositories are not difficult to use - nor are they particularly messy. Wash your hands! :)
