In my own experience xanax definitely has antidepressant properties. Amazing actually. It makes me feel...perfectly normal. Not euphoric, not high, just completely normal and relaxed.

In clinical studies it was shown to be about the same effectiveness as tricyclics in mild to moderate depression, but in severe depression amitriptyline was a little better than xanax.

The cool thing with xanax is that it works fast, like from day 1 to week 1, and side effects are so few.

But your question is one that has always haunted me...how long will xanax keep working? Dunno. The clinical trials went 6 weeks. Beyond that...months...years...dunno. I wish I did know. If I could know in advance it would keep working, I would be on it in a heartbeat.
