My litmus test for whether or not I'm swinging manic (I'm bipolar-II by the way) is my hours of sleep and any perceived need for more.

Sleeping an average of 3 hours a night for several days in a row, and not feeling tired? Manic. Of course that's also if the other Sx are present like flight of ideas, press of speech, irritability, euphoria, irresponsible behavior, etc. But I always look at the hours of sleep, for some reason that's been a reliable yardstick for me.

Sleeping an average of 3 hours a night for several days, and feeling sacked? Not manic.

I've never had a euphoric mania that didn't turn bad (into either dysphoria or subsequent depression, either way).
