Hi,
One of the best treatments for atypical depression is the MAOI Nardil. The overeating and carbohydrate cravings are a symptom of atypical depression. Unfortunately for me, Nardil causes carbohydrate cravings that can be extreme. We're talking three peanut butter & jelly sandwiches in a half hour or a full pound of chocolate followed by a quart of ice cream. Pretty hard to lose weight on that diet. It is the main reason that I have gone off the medication several times in the last ten years. But, everytime I go off the med the major atypical depression returns after a short time.Currently, I have just started a trial of chromium picolinate. This mineral seems to help some people with their carb cravings. I sure hope it works, because I really need some help with this problem.
Another thing I started just ten days ago is a diet with almost no carbohydrates. It is similat to the Atkin's diet. It seems like by not eating any carbohydrates at all, the craving for them goes down. I've lost twenty pounds in ten days on this, probably mostly water weight. I have lost weight on low carb diets in the past. The problem is, if you go off the diet, the cravings and weight return really fast. This makes for yo-yo dieting, which isn't really healthy. But I had to try something, my normal adult weight is about 205 and I was getting close to 300. My all time high is about 310, can you say morbidly obese?
Good Luck and Take Care,
