I suffer from panic disorder, too, and I sometimes wonder if higher doses of Xanax (which are required for PD) aren't the best treatment, despite the fact that the medical establishment is so ambivalent, to say the least, about long-term benzo use. So usually you get and SSRI whether it works or not, at least the doc sleeps well at night. I'm surprised your doc didn't try to put you on Klonopin instead-not that it works for me, at 1 mg, I'm depressed.
To answer your question-6 mg's a day is more than the usual therapeutic range, which tops off at 4 mg. And at 6 mg, in theory, you may have a harder time withdrawing than if it were at a lower dosage. But the average PD suffer takes more than 4 mg's, as was mentioned, 6-10 mg is sometimes needed. If you feel good, great.
