In reply to Emsam and reverse sleep cycle, posted by NancyCat on July 12, 2006, at 12:23:47
> I've been taking 6mg of Emsam for about a month. I believe it is working as well as Parnate and Nardil have for me in the past. I usually take .25 to .5 mg klonapin at night to help with sleep, but it's often the case that I still don't sleep well. I always wake up exhausted, and I am very sleepy during the afternoon. This has always been true with the MAOIs, but they are the only class of drugs that I have found effective to treat my anxiety/depression. I was hoping the steady delivery system of Emsam would help alleviate feeling so tired. Does anyone have advice for counteracting this reverse sleep cycle while taking Emsam? Any tricks? Also, does anyone see a great psych in the DC area that would be familiar with MAOI patients?
My experience with Nardil and Parnate was that the afternoon sleepiness was due to a lack of sleep during the night, as once I started taking Halcion rather than the weaker Ambien or Benadryl, the sleepiness in the afternoon went away. I am currently taking 50 mg/day Marplan and find that 50 mg Seroquel works reasonably well as a sleep aid and is superior to drugs like Ambien and Lunesta. I have had some success in other situations with 2 mg ProSom, which I also think is superior to Ambien and Lunesta, but it does not seem to work as well as the Seroquel with an MAOI. I also use a good sleep/relaxation CD, which is extremely helpful.Todd
