I think its b/c klonopin is such a strong anti-convulsant (I mean,for a benzo). Tranxene is also a strong anti-convulsant benzo, and its known for causing some **serious** depression. Interestingly enough..they use it as a withdrawal med for alcholics. I guess its punishment for being a drunk.

Xanax has an odd structure, so for a while docs used it in mild cases of mixed anxiety/depression (some older docs still do). The bad thing about it is the half-life; one would think xanax xr would make it better, but it still seems like shrinks go for klonopin over xanax.
