How long before APs work?

Posted by pseudoname on October 24, 2006, at 15:20:00

How long does it usually take before second-generation (third? Abilify, specifically) antipsychotics kick in and relieve obsessional thinking, intrusive thoughts, etc? My impression was that it's fairly quick, a matter of a day or two at the appropriate dose. Is that right?

Or do they take the usual 2-6 weeks like antidepressants?

I ask because on Abilify I had relief from my difficult fixations the second day -- but that benefit went away, just like the immediate transient relief effect (sometimes reported here) from SSRIs & other ADs that can never be regained. So I'm trying higher & higher doses of Abilify to see if it will kick in again.

Once I get to a high dose, should I expect anything different by sticking it out a full 4 further weeks (like with an SSRI)?? Thanks for any comments.
