Glad you were assertive about this with your wife, and your line about bowel movements cracked me up!
My mom has different objections. She'd like to see me go off the meds I'm on, because she thinks they're "bad" given the side effects I have. I'm still getting more benefit from the meds than the problems the SE's cause, so I don't plan to stop. I finally said to her, "Do I seem depressed to you right now?" She said no, as if I was making her point for her. Then I said, "So the meds are working, eh? I'm staying on them."
I agree with you, though. Folks who've never been had the disorder called depression (versus felt depressed occasionally) are much less likely to truly understand the complexities we face in making treatment decisions and trying to get well. And from that lack of experience, their attempts at support sometimes fall flat and other times can feel very hurtful and non-supportive.
One of the reasons I'm grateful for this site.
