Med_Empowered described pretty well what can happen at higher dosages of imipramine. It can produce some cognitive side effects, presumably due to the drug's anticholinergic properties. I did not find it at all sedating, however. At lower dosages, up to 150mg, I didn't find cognitive side effects an issue. Imipramine was considered to be the "gold standard" to which all other antidepressants were compared. Now that the efficacy of SSRIs and Effexor have been established, you don't see imipramine used as a comparator drug very much anymore.
If you wish to try a tricyclic antidepressant, you might want to consider trying desipramine (imipramine derivative) or nortriptyline (amitriptyline derivative) instead. They have much reduced side effects.
Nardil is a great drug. Do not avoid it forever.
