For most people, absence of social connection would likely contribute to, or even cause, depression. Human beings evolved as social animals, not as isolated individuals. Without social connection, people are likely to become depressed. Once depressed, it becomes much more difficult to make social connections, partly because when depressed we lack the energy and confidence to make friends, partly because other people tend to turn away from those who are depressed, often interpreting our depression as a sign that we want to be left alone. To be sure, there are people, both depressed and not depressed, who genuinely want to be alone all or most of the time. But by and large, humans thrive in the company of other people and wither in isolation.
