america is a pill country...i was talking with a european friend about it. He was amazed. He's like "I come here, and everyone either has pills hanging out, can get pills from friends, can call a doctor, has a doctor telling them they need to get on pills, is getting off pills, or used to take pills." I thought about it, and it hit me: we are drugged to the gills. I mean, not that the pills are great--Prozac? SEROQUEL? Come on, these pills are boring as h#ll--but they're just so ubiquitous. And here, this kid is doing OK, his culture is doing OK, and they don't have the multi-gazillion dollar RX drug tab we do.
They do, however, have: legalized gay marriage, awesome welfare benefits, legalized drugs, open access to education, a high standard of living...
and then it hit me: drugs are often just a cheap substitute for a better world. Sigh.
