Common for MAOI not to work second time around????

I've heard several people say in here that they had some success with a MAOI. Then they switched to another drug in hopes of better success, but it didn't work out. So then they went back to the original MAOI and they didn't have the same initial response or any response.
Do you think that is more common or uncommon to happen? You know, for the med to not work the second time around?
Why wouldn't a drug work the same the second time around, if that is true?
