Fred; no you are not too old; I am your age. It is not too late to do something about it. It does not have to do with what you think. Larry Hoover is correct. Besides, if I had never gotten the CPAP, likely it would have taken 10 years or more for damage to be noted. Get on the list to do a sleep study. It is not too late and won't be even two or three years from now. In the meantime, yes use the tongue thing they gave you.
