I've relatively recently started tranylcypromine--a month or two ago--and thought I'd try describing a phenomen I've found--that of an excessively low dose being the only thing that seems useful.
I'll describe my experience: I no longer find the immediate psychostimulant effect of parnate useful--it mosly makes me jittery, but even at a ten milligram dose, taken only once every several days, I have a noticeable increase in energy and concentration. This is most noticeable on the days after I take a 10mg dose, as on that day I feel the immediate stimulant effects that obscure it somewhat. In any case, I find myself slightly more energetic and swift-minded. It becomes easier to get up in the morning, too--at the expense of lighter sleep.
I am not able to convince myself that this is a placebo effect, and my doctor believes it plausible that I am getting a genuine effect. However...what I understand of pharmacology seems to suggest otherwise. Anyone understand if/how such a low dose could be beneficial, or what could be happening in terms of neurochemistry?
(The reasons I do not take higher doses of parnate (or other MAO inhibitors), are sleep disruption and a strange, fuzzy, foggy-headedness that makes thinking almost difficult. It's intolerable, causes severe cognitive slowing, and comes with taking any MAO inhibitor for more than a few days.) I am grateful to have found a med that seems to help...but it seems very strange.
