Abnormal Involuntary Movement scale, it is a subjective test of possible TD that is supposed to be given as a protocol by doctors who treat patients with neuroleptics every 3 to 6 months or so, and initially to get a baseline.
It is a simple subjective test of various movements, standing up, posture, and other things, generally to catch a patient off guard in ways because TD almost always follows a pattern that if one movement is interrupted intentionally another is stopped. Also, people with TD are generally not aware that they have TD. Yes, that is true and noted by Wirshing and Wirshing. It has to be pointed out most of the time and then a patient may become aware that they have it. Also sometimes what may seem to be TD may in fact be a nasty form of EPS (extrapyramidal symptoms, or side effects from neuroleptics and more rarely from some tricyclics and even more rarely from SSRIs) as EPS and TD are two things on opposite ends of a sliding scale.
Doctors not familiar with this test should really not be giving their patients antipsychotics. It does a disservice to the patient, does not follow the pattern of informed consent for taking the neuroleptic in the first place.
