Canine Contraceptives

My bitch, Poppy has just come into heat again and someone told me they get a hormone injection from the vet at the start of each period to stop it. Does anyone else use this method to prevent pregnancy, and does anyone know anything about it? I don't want to have her spayed as I may breed from her when she's two, and neutering ruined my other dog's coat and made him fat so I don't want to go down that route with her.
