Your story says that it doesn't make physically depended immediately (what is claimed of many people or written in books, studies). So if there's more bad stress you can start but you're capable to stop. That is probably easier with a long-acting benzo, I think. What I have read is that it is still not clear if benzos make somebody physically depended. Maybe benzos just work. That benzos work for anxiety is clear (amygdala pictures, direct path colliculus superior) but why tolerance or not isn't.
I think cognitive deficits are more caused due to sedation (eg. valium) than to the "slow down" of the brain.
There still is the long acting librium that is not depressogenic.
