I just remembered that the clinical term for that weird feeling is "depersonalization."
A few times I have accidentally hyperventilated and got the same weird feeling; so maybe it is related to breathing and anxiety?
Sometimes taking deep, slow breathes from your stomach (and not chest) helps.
