Prozac is supplied as a racemic mixture of R- and S- enantiomers, both of which are roughly equal in antidepressant effect. Of all the metabolites, S-norfluoxetine is also considered to be of similar antidepressant effect, and it has a longer half-life than its parent. R-norfluoxetine is both less active, and better eliminated, so it is of little consequence.
Poor metabolizers at 2D6 produce less S-norfluoxetine, but because the parent is active, it is considered to be of little therapeutic consequence.
