SSREs are not just another way to line the drugmaker's pockets. Tianeptine works, for some but not others, just as SSRIs work for some but not others. For me it provides better anxiety control and equal antidepressant effect, with no observable side-effects, for which I'm very grateful.

I aree with medweirdo that the situation merely indicates how little is known about depression. There are dozens of antidepressants with very different profiles and mechanisms of action, and they all work somewhat. No one really knows why.

For what it's worth, tianeptine also raises levels of dopamine in certain areas of the brain, by about twenty percent, and reduces the release of acetylcholine. Either could conceivably be related to its antidepressant action.
