That's fascinating, Larry. Even though I developed a major depression 8 years ago, I never had the slighest whisper of a suicidal thought until I started taking Prozac. Not to take anything away from the people who have really benefitted from SSRIs, but for me, they were a complete disaster- obsessive suicidal thoughts, almost total anhedonia, and a complete loss of my sense of myself as a sexual being. There were many losses (now being gradually reversed) and NO gains.
But for others reading here, this doesn't mean that your experience will be the same as mine. I must have those genes mentioned in the article Larry quoted. A lot of people have had positive experiences, especially when they combine the medications with psychotherapy. It will be wonderful when people can be screened for these genes. And, by then, we'll probably not be relying so much on SSRIs and SNRIs anyway: hopefully, we'll have newer drugs which target what is wrong in our brains, but will not cause such devastasting side-effects in so many people.
