Generally speaking, seroquel is probably the most sedating of the atypicals APs. I was on zyprexa for many years and liked it. I took it at 4pm, which allowed me to mellow out nicely between 6pm and bedtime. Most people take it closer to bedtime. I think it needed a couple hours to get going first. There was always a slight hangover fuzzy feeling at waking, though slight compared to most meds I've tried, and I did not have any daytime sedation from it.

I tried seroquel and it knocked me for a loop. the sedation, foggyness and fuzzyness was heavy and lasted all day. Talk about sedation. That stuff would be good to shoot at elephants or tigers if you wanted to walk among them safely.

Risperdal is another choice. It is slightly activating at real low doses and then becomes more like an atypical AP is meant to be at doses higher than that, but usually not heavily se dating.

Those two seem to have the best odds of success for most people, with zyprexa probably being best liked and tolerated.

Abilify is popular and when someone likes it they really like it. But, those people are few and far between. Over the years here at pbabble I've seen a lot of people with strange troubles and dislikes on abilify.

All have downsides. With risperdal it is the prolactin raising effect, which increases potential for sexual side effects and other weird hormonal things. Zyprexa has diabetes type risks related to pancreas. That risk can likely be minimized to nothing by keeping your food choices super low in sugars.

In the world of natural medicine, kava kava is similar. It blocks dopamine receptors, it is a norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor, and it somehow interacts with the gaba system similar to benzos, all with the effect of being calming yet not very sedating. Though most recommend it not be used for longterm, that can be said of antidepressants and especially antipsychotics as well.
