I remember reading how the use of maois as ad's came about. A new drug was being tried in a TB ward in the 1950's. This was a TB drug and not an ad. It was noticed that many of the women began singing and dancing and were in a much better mood. This drug became one of the first marketed ad's. The drug later became discontinued due to sudden deaths. It was later discovered that was due to the so called cheese effect. This bit of info was documented in "Listening To prozac" by Peter kramer. Even though this was not a double blinded study the fact that a group of women that were getting a TB drug suddenly felt much better seems like it could only be explained by a true ad effect.
