SSRI and Beta Blocker..Autoreceptor question

Posted by garyengelm on December 19, 2007, at 17:19:24

I've tried Lexapro on 4 different occasions. I keep trying it because for the short time I can tolerate the drug, I feel it helping my depression immensly.

Here is my dilema....I've been on Serzone 200mg bid for about 6 years. I can't seem to wean off of it as it puts me into severe withdrawal and I'm working on that, but when I combine Serzone with Lexapro or any SSRI, I go into pre-serotonin syndrome.

Here is my big question: I take Metoprolol (beta blocker) 12.5mg bid. A friend of mine told me that Pindolol, another beta blocker turns off the Serotonin autoreceptor and allows Serotonin to flood the synaptic gateways. He isn't sure if this holds true to Metoprolol, but if it does, I can stop the metoprolol, as I only took it for panic attacks, which I don't even get anymore, I just have GAD without panic.

Appreciate any advice if there is truth to this....

Thanks in advance...
