I am also afraid of death -- but that's just the rules of life, whether you're an atheist or agnostic or not. But there are ways of making one more "functional" (I don't particularly like that name, but it refers to how one is capable of doing more in life and able to do things on one's own.
At some point, some reasonable risks have to be taken -- nobody should be asking ultimate unreasonable feats but the more one gets engaged in projects and confidence building, the less one's mental illness (I prefer biochemical imbalance) is the only focus.
And socialization is important too. I wish I had more of that, I do need it. I have some ways to go but finding that spark, that interests you can surprise you and is a key in treatment.
