In reply to Nardil-the results!, posted by yoda on September 10, 2008, at 18:09:41
Yoda,
It's great to hear that your social anxiety is significantly reduced now that you're taking 60 mg/day of Nardil. I too had excellent results with Nardil for depression at one point.
See below for my responses to specific portions of your post...
> food restictions are a joke! i drink alcohol in the form of spirits, cider, tined beer every night.pizza without peperoni, fresh cheese. infact all i avoid is aged meats, yeast extract and mature cheeses!
What is tined beer? If you're drinking tap beer, then I would avoid that, too. The list of no-no's, according to a 1996 study, is actually quite short, but includes some foods that you're probably eating: "We recommend that users avoid aged cheeses; aged or cured meats (e.g., air-dried sausage); any potentially spoiled meat, poultry, or fish; broad (fava) bean pods; Marmite concentrated yeast extract; sauerkraut; soy sauce and soy bean condiments; and tap beer (Gardner et al., 1996, 99)."
I have also read that ginseng should not be taken with MAOIs, including Nardil. The ginseng probably won't be a problem for you if it already hasn't been, but I just wanted to let you know that the MAOI no-no lists that I've read say to avoid ginseng.
> Does anyone know whether nardil works better if it is dissolved under the tongue, which would stop the distruction by digestive juices?
I have never heard of anyone trying to dissolve Nardil under the tongue. There is, however, some reason to believe that Nardil might work better if it has an enteric coating. A lot of patients taking Pfizer's U.S. Nardil complained of a loss of effectiveness and an increase in side effects after the manufacturer changed the coating and other inactive ingredients in 2003. Also, a Ph.D. thesis written by Gan-Lin Chen (1986) showed that phenelzine undergoes chemical degradation 463 times as rapidly in stomach-like conditions (pH 1.94, hydrochloric acid buffer, aerobic conditions) than in conditions more similar to those in the small intestine (pH 7.33, phosphate buffer, anaerobic conditions).
I found that taking my Nardil in emptied-out enteric capsules prolongued the medication's effectiveness and reduced its side effects. Psycho-Babble member Michael Bell described his method of protecting Nardil with enteric capsules in the following posts:

http://www.dr-bob.org/babble/alter/20050510/msgs/506644.htmlI am not sure if the current version of Nardil manufactured for use in the U.K. has an enteric coating or a film coating. If it already has an enteric coating, then using the capsules as Michael Bell and I did would be unnecessary.
