I don't know about these reports of generics not working -- I'll take your word for it, but there is also the rule of causality is not always causation. Ambien is only meant for short term use and it may also be that you have been on zolpidem too long -- maybe the "real" Ambien has slightly more in it but there is definitely a tolerance effect.Restoril will create a tolerance effect quite quickly, it is a metabolite of Valium and it could be weeks or a few months before it may not be very effective for sleep.
But as they say, your miles may vary -- you may be more lucky with pseudobenzodiazepines and benzodiazepines, that is if you aren't already taking concurrently one, say klonopin or something. Cross tolerance is quite possible.
