I have seen several cites where low levels of Cyclic AMP are associated with depression , below are just a couple of them :
http://www.expert-reviews.com/doi/abs/10.1586/14737175.2.3.347May 2002, Vol. 2, No. 3, Pages 347-354
(doi:10.1586/14737175.2.3.347)Cyclic AMP response element-binding protein and depression
Johannes Thome, Fritz A Henn, Ronald S Duman"..There is evidence that this cAMPPKACREB system is disturbed in depression and that an increased cyclic AMP response element binding protein activity may result in an improved neural plasticity, which in turn could contribute to amelioration of the clinical symptoms of depression. Urinary Cyclic AMP in `Endogenous' and `Neurotic' Depression
K. SINANAN M.A., M.D., M.R.C.Psych.1, A. M. B. KEATINGE B.A. Mod., M.Sc.2, P. G. S. BECKETT B.A., M.D., F.R.C.Psych.3, and W. CLAYTON LOVE M.A., M.Sc., Ph.D.4"Twenty-four-hour urinary cyclic AMP levels were measured in patients with endogenous depression and neurotic depression and in control subjects. Urinary cyclic AMP excretion was found to be decreased in both endogenous and neurotic depressions and could not be used to distinguish between these two. The 24-hour urinary cyclic AMP levels increased to control values in the patients with both types of depression as they responded to treatment."
I have also seen conflicting abstracts that indicate that in bipolar Cyclic AMP is 1. just elevated but also 2. that it is LOW in the depressive phase and elevated in mania phase.
I really don't know much about cyclic AMP, is this a cause or effect of differnt mood disorders?
Does anyone know how Cyclic AMP is effected in anxiety disorders?Forskolin , a supplement , seem to be the gold standard in studies to raise Cyclic AMP levels. Has anyone heard or had experience using this substance as an anti-depressant?
