In reply to parnate hypertensio/hypotension -what to do?, posted by Cseagraves on January 8, 2009, at 12:32:49
> I've seen on some post to take either nifedipine or some other drug (I believe it started with a "P") for hypertention. And I think I read on another post saying that one of these was not the better one to take because it could cause other major problems. Also, what do you do for a hypotension episode?

If you decide to do a Parnate trial, I can tell you what makes sense for a person to do at home or while out, as for managing episodes of High BP and low BP. Again, this may not apply as sound treatment for you as you are being treated for high BP. I was recently "reminded" that I am the patient. Be one. I'd like to pass that advice on to you as you already have high BP and it sounds as if no Doc is going to be carefully managing it.
Parnate is known for its highs and lows with re: to BP in the beginning of treatment. How long and to what degree people have s/e's or trouble is individual. But plan that its likely you will have some of both.
What you'll need:
For both: BP Cuff. A Must for you.
High BP or hypertention:
~Nifedipine or another hypertensive medication appropriate for your situation. Keep some of this with you at ALL times, some in purse, some at home.
~Keep a food list with you at all times, you will need to be very CAREFUL to avoid foods that are not allowed.
~Make sure others are aware that you are taking MAOI, that includes medical personnel, have med list available so that if you are being treated by ANYONE they will see what meds to avoid, that includes DDS!
~I'm assuming you know about the symptoms, etc. for high BP, and what to do. If not please address this question to your Doc. Remind him/her that you have high BP and are taking or plan to take an MAOI, Parnate.
Low BP or hypotention:
~Salt tablets
~Gatorade, or other, to replace electrolites
~Lots of water, stay hydrated
~If you feel mildly dizzy, squat down, or hold onto something, it'll pass
~If bad, you'll know, sit (before you fall!) or lay down immediatley. Prop your legs up.Hope that helps fill in some blanks for you! I am not any kind of expert, just another "patient" like you, however, I would have liked to have this info prior to starting Parnate rather than learning the hard way. Any symptoms outside the norm please contact your Docs.
~Jade
