Experts Question....The Mechanics of MAOIs

Posted by bleauberry on January 28, 2009, at 18:15:43

So MAOIs irreversibly shut down the MAO enzymes for what,10 days, 14 days, something roughly like that? But, why then are multiple daily doses needed, or even daily doses? Why would not a once a week dose do the job?

I can only assume that the MAO inhibition is not the mechanism that gives the antidepressant effect. If it was, then a single dose should last a week. But, people relapse or experience withdrawals within days, sometimes mere hours? Why is that? The MAO enzymes are already shut down for the near future. I don't get it.

In the case of Parnate I know there is some amphetamine-like effect at play. But I have no clue what Nardil or Marplan are doing besides the MAO inhibition. It just seems there is something else these drugs are doing accounting for their effects and that it is not the MAO action doing it.

Any thoughts? Ideas? Theories? Comments?
