Antacids affecting serum levels of medication

Posted by twinch42085 on February 19, 2009, at 9:13:11

Hi babblers,

Does anyone think that antacids cause your medication to be stronger or weaker? I understand that certain foods may interact with medicines, especially grapefruit, antacids are a different story.

Here is my scenario. Sometimes I take Milk of Magnesia to relieve occasional constipation. I know that it can also be used for indigestion.

For example: You take MOM once a day before bedtime. You do this everyday. Overtime don't you think the MOM would eat away at your stomach? Now, with this being said don't you think that taking MOM and medicine would double the chances of having a problem since the antancid could or could not increase the potency of the medicine?

What I am trying to say is this. Meds and antacids create harsher effects on your body cause they interact with one another?

Thanks :-)
