Also MAO tends to create some neurotoxins as it metabolizes random stuff floating around in the brain. dopainergic degeneration even if not to parkinsons still results in symptoms of old age, i think this is why it extends life in some animals studdies. not aware of any other MAOI showing effects, although any MAOB inhibiting drug would share some of the effects.

However, in the more recent literature dealing with free radical formation, it is thought that too much MAO activity is responsible for a great deal of it, and that any kind of MAOI will help prevent this from happening. I don't know that any of the propargyl derivatives like selegiline clean up the mess in addition to preventing it from occurring to begin with. If they do, then it might be a property of the molecule itself and not its MAOI properties. Either way, it would be interesting to investigate pargyline, another propargyl selective MAO-B inhibitor, in these contexts.
