Hey,
In 2008, the FDA had indicated it would investigate claims of generic Wellbutrin inefficiency, but I cna't remember if it was the XR or the SR; you'll have to google that.
I once had the same questions as you. After trying one generic brand unsuccessfully, I had my pharmacy special order the other generic brand (can't remember which manufacturer). But I've tried 2 generic brands and last time I had the pharmacy special order the brand brand in for me-and it had the same effect; none of them worked. I went through the trouble because WB was such a good drug for me in the past, I had hoped it would work again (and solve all my problems..lol). So-all 3 did not work. It's wasn't the drugs-generic manufacturers or specific brands--it was my brain. There was no difference among the 3 in my case.
I do know one generic manufacturer's pill has the purple coating similiar to the brand (but without the cute little smiley face..lol); the other manufacturer has a pink pill w/no coating. You could ask the pharmacy to give you the one with the purple coating if you are concerned.
I don't know if that really answers your question, but I hope that helps.
