How long for Effexor XR to work?

I've been on Effexor XR for 5 weeks now and I don't feel any better. But I've only been on the highest dose, 300mg, for 2 weeks. Just generally speaking, about how much longer should I stay on this before I decide that it just isn't working? Thanks.
