These people didn't seek any treatment until the study? I know they had to stop sleep meds before the study began, but couldn't they have been taking meds and/or receiving therapy, using alternative things, for years before being recruited?

I'll bet some people never do seek help, though. Just like for chronic pain and other conditions. They just live that way and suffer from all the things loss of sleep can contribute to - it's awful, really. I only have insomnia sometimes, and it's usually mild, and even that is devastating to me the next day, or sometimes for a week. Can't imagine years, like you said.

What about it do you disagree with?

I personally have always wondered about a short trial of Ambien when my sleep problems were worse a couple years back, but stories of bad dreams scared me off. Seriously. I already have nightmares regularly anyway, don't need more caused by a med! Especially since my T. and I both believe many of my episodes of insomnia are made longer and worse by fear of going to sleep because I don't want these dreams to happen. Fortunately, I can take a little diphenhydramine occasionally and it *usually* gets me to sleep. Rather not take anything, though.

Insomnia sucks.
