I'm 58, Philippa, and was drawn to the bioidenticals as being the answer when things unraveled at menopause at 53. I'm disillusioned. Most of the alternative docs. that I saw, I'm now convinced were in it just for the $$. I was put on transdermal testosterone at one point, followed directions faithfully and ended up with a blood level of 400 where a 'normal' level would be about 40 for a woman. So much for the experts. I now take just Premarin(my uterus was a casualty of all this). I liken the whole hormone mess to modern psychiatry. No-one knows how anything works and it's all just trial and error. So if the hormones make you feel somewhat better, and you have no medical reason for them to be contraindicated, then continue to take them. But for me they were not the panacea I had hoped for --and this realization cost me hundreds of $$.
