In reply to Anyone combine Wellbutrin SR with IR??, posted by sac on August 2, 2009, at 7:35:58
> I have been on Bupropion SR for about six months now and have only been able to get up to 100 mgs. I am taking it for a combination of depression w/lack of motivation and ADD. My pdoc has tried to get me to increase to 200mgs. and I am just out of my mind with anxiety and agitation when I do that. I also take Prozac 20mgs. and Lithium 450mgs/day. Recently, he suggested that I switch to Bupropion IR to see if I could tolerate a higher dose on that. I do like the more immediate effects it has on motivation but, again, I am anxious. I also have noticed that because of the short half-life of the IR, I do not have consistency through the day. I was wondering if a good strategy might be to take the SR 100mg and combine that with the IR 2-3x day. Anyone done this?
I don't see the purpose of combining an extended release agent with the same compound that is non-extended. It would be like taking Xanax with Xanax XR, at least in my view.
Secondly, unlike most SR/XR/XL/etc agents which are typically 'patent extenders', there is some value in Wellbutrin extended release formulas. They have been shown to greatly reduce the chance of seizures, which is a known side effect of Wellbutrin. With the stimulation of Prozac on board, I just don't see the logic of increasing that possibility.
As mentioned by Scott, a small trial of a stimulant might be better for ADD, carefully, since you have reacted to Wellbutrin with anxiety, which is pretty common.
I couldn't really tolerate the high doses (400 or so) that I was on at one point quite some time ago because it eventually literally set my head on fire (eczema or something) and raised my nighttime OCD through the roof.
