I don't know hardly anything on this topic, Phillipa. I mean, calcium, vit D? Obviously I don't think it is that simple and I'm sure you are already doing those. That's about the extent of my knowledge on that.
With your history however Lyme complications are a possibility. They love bones, joints, glands, skin, collagen. I think the best thing you might be able to do under the circumstances that you described...elderly without much money...is to supply good amounts of collagen forming nutrients. Such as calcium, vit d, zinc picolinate with copper, glucosamine sulfate.
For a very wide variety of symptoms, syndromes, and complaints, two substances that appear very popular and reliable with Integrative MDs are Eleutherococcus (Siberian ginseng 2 caps t.i.d.) or Cordyceps (2 caps t.i.d.). Neither of these specifically are targetted at any particular disease, but help to soften or eliminate many of them. If you boost immune function, oxygen, circulation, adrenal function, glandular function, liver function, overall hormone function, neurotransmitters, reduce inflammation, and sleep better, you can't help but improve just about any disease including all the symptoms you suffer from.
Eleuthero is cheap, Cordyceps more expensive. No matter what other medications or substances you take the rest of your life, these would probably be very good basic staples in your cocktail that help everything work better. Not specifically for osteoporosis, but through all the other benefits would likely strengthen your body against that and perhaps slow it down.
