As is always said, everyone's psychobiology is different, and it is hard to predict which drugs will have the desired effect.

If you are bipolar II, you can try Depakote or Zyprexa, or perhaps Trileptal. If Zyprexa produces unacceptable weight gain, but demonstrates itself to be effective, you can then switch to another antipsychotic such as Abilify. Lamictal would be a nice drug for depression, but it really is not a very good anti-manic drug.

If you are bipolar I, lithium is usually indicated. It does not work for everyone, though. Sometimes another mood-stabilizer is needed, especially when rapid-cyclicity is present. Sometimes, combining lithium and Lamictal produces a good balance of antidepressant and antimanic effects.
