I'm so sorry you're going through this Link..I've had this happen to me, usually during a med change. Even with sleep meds it's happened. My head would be full of uncontrollable racing thoughts and images, feeling utterly devastated and out of control.
An extra dose of benzo will finally stop it, but the fear it causes while you are in the throes of it is devastating. I'm thinking of you.
