klonopin for anxiety? + remeron?

Hi - My brother's family doctor just prescribed 1mg klonopin to help him deal with all the stress in his life. He has always had anxiety but the good ol' family doc never wanted to give him anything for it until recently when he insisted. Now I notice that my brother just seems "out of it" and even a little irritable. He claims he doesn't feel so stressed...

Any idea why the doc would prescribe klonopin, which had been around so long instead of Xanax or something newer? Also little bro has been taking remeron for depression - any ideas what the effect of klonopin + remeron will accomplish? I just don't trust this GP to know enough about psychoactive drugs...
