Here in the UK, chlordiazepoxide (Librium) tends to be the preferred benzo for those with a history of drug misuse because it has a relatively low abuse potential. It's particularly used for alcohol withdrawal symptoms. Diazepam (Valium) is used for withdrawal from benzos and sleeping pills. Not sure whether this is the same in Ireland.
